About the Yancey Theatre

The first gala opening of the Yancey Theatre was August 17, 1939. Prominent local businessmen had formed the Cherokee Amusement Company to provide Burnsville and Yancey County with a movie theatre with the finest in sound, screen quality, and seating and climate comfort. The first movie was “Our Leading Citizen” starring Bob Burns. Gene Autry’s “Western Jamboree” and Chapter No. 1 of “Dare Devils of the Red Circle” ran continuously on Saturday. The following week there was also live music provided by the original “Carter Family”.

Today, owner Alvin Kennedy has worked hard to bring the 65-year-old Burnsville landmark up to today’s movie industry’s technical standards without sacrificing the nostalgic charm of one of western North Carolina’s remaining old time movie theatres. In keeping with the Yancey Theatre’s tradition, Management selects the best films for family viewing in a safe, clean environment.

People from Yancey, Mitchell and Madison County come and enjoy the Yancey Theatre. Something about an old time movie theatre enhances their visit to Burnsville's quaint downtown area.
